Ask Sophie Mae: Fashionable Workout Wear

“Dear Sophie Mae,

I want to look stylish at the gym, but always end up wearing the same old black sweats. What are some cute and comfortable options?”

Dear Ms. Fit,

It’s been said that if you still look cute after a workout, you haven’t worked out hard enough. That being said, you still want to look fashionable at the beginning of your workout, right? After all, you never know who you’ll run into while you’re getting your sweat on. You may be in the same spin class as your future boss or even doing crunches next to your future hottie husband!

While most people would opt for basic black because it can make you appear more slim, you shouldn’t hesitate to add pops of color into your workout wardrobe. The gym is a great place to experiment with trends you may otherwise be to shy to try.

I’ve selected three workout looks to help you look stylish while you sweat. Whether you’re going to a yoga class or Crossfit training.

Looking Stylish in Dance Class

{ While you may be fairly conservative outside of the gym, you can feel free to have fun with your workout gear. I created this look for gals who love their hip hop or Zoomba classes. These Capri leggings are comfortable, yet stylish and I’m a huge fan of some crazy kicks while working out. }

Red Carpet Watch: The 2013 Academy Awards

So, here we are. It’s the morning after the Academy Awards and oh, do we have lots to talk about! While Twitter is abuzz with Oscar hashtags and Jennifer Lawrence meems, I’m more interested in what the stars were wearing.

This year, the stars favored a muted color palette to the bold hues of year’s past. We saw a lot of whites, nudes and soft metallics on everyone from Charlize Theron to Jennifer Lawrence. The only star that opted for a bright color was Jennifer Aniston in a red Valentino gown.

There were some amazing fashion moments and then there were some tragic misses. Here’s my take on what was haute and what was not on last night’s Oscars red carpet.

85th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsJessica Chastain

I have to say that this is my favorite dress that Jessica has worn so far. She looked so chic and glamorous in this golden Armani gown. I also thought her makeup complimented the dress perfectly. Her hair is very “Old Hollywood” and her bold lip makes her skin look like a dream.

85th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsAmy Adams

Oh, Amy. She’s always a fashion winner in my book and this dreamy Oscar de la Renta gown is just one of the many reasons. I’m obsessed with the blue/grey color and the girly detailing on the bodice. Her blonde hair also looked great pulled pack into a french twist, which really showed off the neckline of the dress.

85th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsNaomi Watts

Naomi received some grief for this silver Armani sheath dress, but I thought she looked amazing! While others opted for the classic princess silhouette, she rocked a fitted gown with unique neckline. The metallic color looked stunning next to her skin and sparkled as she walked the red carpet. I don’t care what anyone says, I loved this look!

85th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsCharlize Theron

This was by far my favorite look of the night. Charlize could wear a paper bag and make it look like couture, but this structured Christian Dior is simply spectacular on her. I’m loving the peplum waist and interesting neckline. She looked streamlined,  modern and simply beautiful.

85th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsJennifer Aniston

Though I wasn’t a huge fan of the straight neckline, I really loved the red color of this Valentino gown. Jennifer chose to keep her accessories and hair style fairly simple, which I thought was a good choice. Some said the look was too casual for the Oscars, but I think there’s something to be said about simple elegance.

85th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsJennifer Lawrence

J. Law was the talk of the town last night. She tripped going up the stairs to receive the Best Actress award and then flipped off the press later in the evening, but I’m still a fan. She chose a flowing Christian Dior gown with silver accessories for the big night. I thought she looked young, yet sophisticated all at once.

Chic for Cheap: Georgina Chapman for JC Penney

georgina-chapmanGeorgina Champan’s collaboration with JC Penny could not be more timely. While she prepares to dress the lovely starlets for the Oscars, we finally get the chance to get our hands on a piece of her red carpet confections. Though it may not have hand-beaded detailing or a six-foot train, it also won’t be $6,000.

Georgina Chapman is one half of the design team that makes up the mega brand, Marchesa. She and co-founder Karen Craig are known for their effortlessly chic gowns and girly separates. Celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Blake Lively and Olivia Wilde (just to name a few) flock to their ultra feminine designs because they really understand how the modern woman wants to dress.

The new affordable line for JC Penney, Pearl by Georgina Chapman, was inspired by her three-step daughters. It has a slightly younger aesthetic, which is sure to be a hit with the fashion obsessed teen to twenty-somethings. The line is a mix of Audrey Hepburn meets Carrie Bradshaw and couldn’t look more fresh.

The 15 piece collection is now available online and will be arriving in stores on March 1st. If I was going to prom again, I would have a really hard time deciding which dress to wear. And with prices ranging from $50 to $250, I may choose more than one!

What’s In: Neon Brights

Maybe it’s the fact that spring is just around the corner, or perhaps I’m just craving a little pop of color in a sea of  mundane black and grey. Either way, I’m in luck because neon brights are huge right now. We saw bright oranges, apple greens and fresh corals and all over the runways this spring. All you have to do is search “neon fashion” on Pinterest to know that the trend is what’s happening.

There are a lot of ways that you can incorporate neon into your wardrobe without looking like you’re headed to an 1980′s rave. Using hints of bright colors in your trims, zippers and small prints are a great way to add an element to surprise to your look.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you can rock a neon maxi skirt with a simple t-shirt. Or try a brightly colored lace dress in a fun textile like Chloe Grace Moretz and the People’s Choice Awards. I’m also pretty obsessed with an idea of a loud blazer with your uniform skinny jeans.

The biggest mental roadblock woman have when embracing a trend that involves loud colors is that feel they can’t “pull it off”. I say that’s nonsense! Just think of the brighter colors as a neutral. Instead of wearing a blue jean, try a brighter color instead. You can also trade your everyday brown handbag for a pop color like neon yellow or pink.

Haute Topic: Designer Vault

These days, you can’t even turn on the TV without hearing about the state of the economy. Even our three-years old’s know the meaning of the word “recession”! With all this craziness, fashion has most definitely taken a backseat to the necessities in life. However, like most dreary realities, there is always a silver lining. Designer consignment has never been as big as it is today. There are consignment stores popping up everywhere and Bravo even created a TV reality show about it called, Fashion Hunters. What is it about this new shopping trend that makes it so appealing and why has it taken so long for everyone to catch on?

I happen to be a huge fan of consignment and often encourage my clients to trade or sell their unused or gently worn designer clothing and accessories. However, you want to make sure you are consigning with someone you can trust. That’s where Designer Vault comes in. In this post, I chat with the Vault’s creator and CEO, Christina Samoylov to talk about what she’s looking to sell, how to spot a fake and vintage Chanel bags.
