Chic for Cheap: Georgina Chapman for JC Penney

georgina-chapmanGeorgina Champan’s collaboration with JC Penny could not be more timely. While she prepares to dress the lovely starlets for the Oscars, we finally get the chance to get our hands on a piece of her red carpet confections. Though it may not have hand-beaded detailing or a six-foot train, it also won’t be $6,000.

Georgina Chapman is one half of the design team that makes up the mega brand, Marchesa. She and co-founder Karen Craig are known for their effortlessly chic gowns and girly separates. Celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Blake Lively and Olivia Wilde (just to name a few) flock to their ultra feminine designs because they really understand how the modern woman wants to dress.

The new affordable line for JC Penney, Pearl by Georgina Chapman, was inspired by her three-step daughters. It has a slightly younger aesthetic, which is sure to be a hit with the fashion obsessed teen to twenty-somethings. The line is a mix of Audrey Hepburn meets Carrie Bradshaw and couldn’t look more fresh.

The 15 piece collection is now available online and will be arriving in stores on March 1st. If I was going to prom again, I would have a really hard time deciding which dress to wear. And with prices ranging from $50 to $250, I may choose more than one!

From the Runway: BCBG Max Azira Spring 2013

BCBG Max Azira’s spring 2013 collection was met with mixed reviews when it first premiered last fall. The husband and wife design team said they were inspired by the provocative fashion images of photographer, Helmut Newton. Though some associated the “bondage” designs with the 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy, I thought the collection was the perfect combination of hard and soft.

Leather harnesses fought to contain flowing silhouettes of chiffon. The color palate was a muted wonderland of pale pinks paired with shades of charcoal, coral and grey. The shapes were structured, yet also seemed effortless at the same time. I also really loved the use of lace and leather because it seemed very “now”. Every piece seemed to contain a poetic feel that kept me wanting more.

Needless to say I wanted just about every piece and I’ve been shopping the collection for both myself and clients!

Haute Topic: What is a Fashion Stylist?

Stylist Outfits

It was only in recent years when TV shows like The Rachel Zoe Project, What Not to Wear and The City have given the masses a glimpse into the world of fashion stylists. I have been in the fashion industry for over 10 years and have been a wardrobe stylist for six of those. While there is definitely more awareness about what stylists do, I still get asked time and time again what my job actually entails. Do I mingle with models and celebrities? Do I jet off to runway shows in Paris and Milan? Do I get paid to shop all day? While my job is definitely glamorous at times, it’s really about helping my clients achieve a sense of confidence in themselves and in how they dress.

In the post, I will give you a sneak peek into my world as a fashion stylist and help shed light on one of the misunderstood jobs in the fashion industry. I am often asked to speak at college fashion courses to educate styling hopefuls on what a day in the life of a stylist really looks like. The most popular question I am asked is what I enjoy most about my job. My answer is always the same, I love helping woman discover a sense of personal style that is all their own. I do this through many different style techniques I have mastered through the years.

Below I share my top five definitions on what a fashion stylist is, what I do and how I can change the way you think about how you dress

1. I help you get organized. When I begin working with a client for the first time, I always begin with what I call my “Closet Update”. This is when I go into your closet to see what we’re working with. I know it may seen daunting at first (what about those ratty t-shirts piled in the corner?!), but it must be done. By doing this, I can see what is working for you and what isn’t. I will have you try on your favorite pair of jeans or your go-to suit to evaluate the fit and if the style is really working for you. We’ll make three piles, donation, tailoring and toss. Next, we’ll make a list of key pieces that I believe we should add into your wardrobe. It’s then when the fun can begin and we can go shopping!

2. I help you dress for your unique lifestyle. My goal has never been to dress celebrities (though it is fun when I get the opportunity!), but to dress the “every-day woman” and teach her how to shop for her unique body type, lifestyle and budget. My clients range from those who are confused about what to wear, to those who simply don’t have the time to shop. After our initial consultation, I either go shopping with my clients or go shopping for them and bring options to their home. I enjoy the opportunity to go shopping with my clients because it allows for a one-on-one learning experience that they can apply when they go shopping alone. I teach them why items and colors work for them and what to wear with what. It’s always very rewarding when we finish a Styling Spree because my clients have a renewed sense of confidence in the way they dress and in themselves.

3. I keep your budget in mind. I strongly believe that style has no size or price tag. It is very important to me that my clients keep within their budgets, while still feeling and looking fabulous. I encourage everyone to shop the sale racks, go to vintage stores, and even hit discount stores like Marshals or TJ Maxx. The reason most people don’t shop in places like these is because they easily get overwhelmed by the sheer mass of clothing and quickly give up. I can help you navigate the endless racks of sale items to help you find some great pieces that you never may have even see if you were to go to the store by yourself.

4. I show you how to put it all together. The number one issue I hear from my clients is that they usually know what looks cute on the hanger, but they have no idea how to wear it. It’s my job as a stylist to “style” you and to show you what items work together and look great on your unique body type. My goal is never to change a client’s style so much that they dress like me or a celebrity, but to transform them into a better version of themselves. This should be the end result of any styling experience, no matter if you’re shopping for work or for play.

5. I help you to embrace a personal sense of style. Every styling experience you have with me will be about you. It’s not about what someone else thinks or wants (your mother, your co-worker, your best friend or even me!), it’s about what makes you feel and look your best. I’m simply there to guide you in the right direction and help you make style choices to highlight your best features and assets. Every item that we purchase together should be something you will love to wear time and time again. Feeling confident in yourself and how you look is what personal style is all about!

Red Carpet Watch: Critics Choice Awards

Here we go again! Another round of rd carpet do’s and don’ts to tide you over until, well, tomorrow. Unlike The People’s Choice Awards from the prior evening, The Critics Choice Awards fashion was a bit more reserved. Stars like Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway hit it out of the park by opting for simple, yet stunning designs. Marion Cotillard also looked every bit of the fashion plate with her whimsical Zuhair Murad frock.

The misses of the night include Elle Fanning, who I give some leeway because she’s young and takes risks. Another flop was Amy Adams in an ill-fitted navy and cream number. I usually like everything she wears, but this time she fell flat.

Check out who made my best dressed list below.

My favorite of the night was Emily Blunt in a dreamy creamy Miu Miu with gold heels. I loved the slightly awkward length of the dress and the stunning neckline. Her newly blonde hair and red lips made the look even more perfect.

Marion Cotillard gets two photos because the back of this frilly moment is just too good to miss! For a gal that can pull off pretty much anything, I love how she took a risk with this playful dress by Zuhair Murad. The chic side bun and minimalistic makeup let the dress do all the talking.

Jennifer Lawrence’s got some flack for her black Prabal Gurung, but I liked it. The mixture of leather and silk made a statement and did amazing things for her body. The only thing I would have skipped were the earrings as they seemed a bit much with the design.

Ok, so I have to admit I had no idea who Kerry Bishe was until today. But after seeing her rock this killer long-sleeve Pamela Rolland gown last night, she may be my new favorite person. This dress hit all the right notes with its flawless draping and use of color.

Naomi Watts looked simple, yet elegant in a black Pucci sheath. The chiffon panel at the neck added a bit of mystery and her turquoise drop earrings proved to be the perfect accessory choice.

Red Carpet Watch: The People’s Choice Awards

The People’s Choice Awards kicked off the award season last night with an array of celebs who came out to rock the red carpet with some great (and no-so-great) fashion choices. One of my favorites of the night was Taylor Swift, who traded her signature girly vintage frocks for a chic and daring white gown.  I also really loved Chloe Grace Moretz, in a neon yellow Simone Rocha number. It was feminine, young and was a great fit for her fun personality.

Some of my least favorite looks of the night where Paris Hilton in a poorly fitted acid trip of a dress complete with a disastrous shoe choice. Another miss was Kaley Cuoco’s strange ballerina get-up that just looked like a bad prom dress. Good or bad, the People’s Choice Awards always provide entertaining fashion moments that are sure to create buzz to satisfy us until the next red carpet.

Taylor Swift looked every-bit of the chic starlett in a fitted white gown with plunging neckline. Her makeup, hair and accessories also complimented her new grown-up look perfectly.

chloe-moretz-peoples-choice-awards-20131

Chloe Grace Moretz sported a bright neon flower power dress that was perfectly styled with black ankle pumps. I love how age appropriate this dress is for this talented 15 year-old.

mary-rickards-peoples-choice-awards-20131

Awkward star Ashley Rickards rocked the pale color palette that was so popular on the red carpet. The art deco design on the dress looked just right with her modern wavy hair style.

naomi-watts-peoples-choice-awards-20131

Naomi Watts received mixed reviews for her black and gold Alexander McQueen gown. I think she looked chic and modern and loved the backless top.

I also really liked the LBD Mae Whitman paired with nude heels and red lips. The structure of the dress really flattered her figure and skin tone.

olivia-munn-peoples-choice-awards-20131

Beauty Olivia Munn also got mixed reactions to her black and white Carolina Herrera dress. I thought it actually worked on her because it was balanced with a simple hair style and accessorized with a chunky cocktail ring.
