Chic for Cheap: Leather

Leather never goes out of style, but it just so happens to be a huge trend for spring. Though I do recommend investing in quality leather pieces, there’s no need to spend a ton of cash when you are simply wanting to rock leather details for a season or two.

I’ve chosen a few of my favorite pieces for this post that include a military jacket with leather sleeves (so cute with a maxi skirt!), embellished leather shorts and mint color handbags with studs.

This post will also be helpful if you are opposed to sporting real leather, as most of the “cheaper” items are pleather.

From the Runway: BCBG Max Azira Spring 2013

BCBG Max Azira’s spring 2013 collection was met with mixed reviews when it first premiered last fall. The husband and wife design team said they were inspired by the provocative fashion images of photographer, Helmut Newton. Though some associated the “bondage” designs with the 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy, I thought the collection was the perfect combination of hard and soft.

Leather harnesses fought to contain flowing silhouettes of chiffon. The color palate was a muted wonderland of pale pinks paired with shades of charcoal, coral and grey. The shapes were structured, yet also seemed effortless at the same time. I also really loved the use of lace and leather because it seemed very “now”. Every piece seemed to contain a poetic feel that kept me wanting more.

Needless to say I wanted just about every piece and I’ve been shopping the collection for both myself and clients!

Red Carpet Watch: The People’s Choice Awards

The People’s Choice Awards kicked off the award season last night with an array of celebs who came out to rock the red carpet with some great (and no-so-great) fashion choices. One of my favorites of the night was Taylor Swift, who traded her signature girly vintage frocks for a chic and daring white gown.  I also really loved Chloe Grace Moretz, in a neon yellow Simone Rocha number. It was feminine, young and was a great fit for her fun personality.

Some of my least favorite looks of the night where Paris Hilton in a poorly fitted acid trip of a dress complete with a disastrous shoe choice. Another miss was Kaley Cuoco’s strange ballerina get-up that just looked like a bad prom dress. Good or bad, the People’s Choice Awards always provide entertaining fashion moments that are sure to create buzz to satisfy us until the next red carpet.

Taylor Swift looked every-bit of the chic starlett in a fitted white gown with plunging neckline. Her makeup, hair and accessories also complimented her new grown-up look perfectly.

Chloe Grace Moretz sported a bright neon flower power dress that was perfectly styled with black ankle pumps. I love how age appropriate this dress is for this talented 15 year-old.

Awkward star Ashley Rickards rocked the pale color palette that was so popular on the red carpet. The art deco design on the dress looked just right with her modern wavy hair style.

Naomi Watts received mixed reviews for her black and gold Alexander McQueen gown. I think she looked chic and modern and loved the backless top.

I also really liked the LBD Mae Whitman paired with nude heels and red lips. The structure of the dress really flattered her figure and skin tone.

Beauty Olivia Munn also got mixed reactions to her black and white Carolina Herrera dress. I thought it actually worked on her because it was balanced with a simple hair style and accessorized with a chunky cocktail ring.

Style Copy Cat: Elizabeth Olsen

Elizabeth Olsen may have two pretty famous sisters (yeah, you may have heard of them), but ever since her movie debut in Martha Marcy May Marlene in 2011, she has made a name for herself and has proved she has some serious acting chops. Elizabeth has become known as quite the fashion plate on the indie red carpets as well.

Her style always seems effortless and oh so chic. She typically favors designers that offer unexpected silhouettes like Prada and Marni. On her days off, you can usually see her sporting funky hats, her round sunnies and vintage boots. Take a cue from this style-setter by keeping your color palette more muted, while paying close attention to fit and detailing.
