Every year, we take time out of our busy schedules to shoot our annual holiday card. It’s just so fun to look back each year and see our little family change and grow. This year was extra special because my hubby and I welcomed a new member to our family, a little rescue named Scout! We had been wanting a sister for our little Sawyer for a while now, so when we saw that she was up for adoption at a local shelter, we knew she was the one. Of course I had to get them bows on Amazon for the shoot!

I often style my clients for family photo-shoots because they don’t have any idea what to waer. What will photograph the best? How can you all coordinate without looking cheesy? How can I look like an elevated version of myself? These are all important things to consider when you’re planning your family photos. I’ve made a quick list of my top tips for looking amazing in your holiday photos.

Consider the Location: When you are are putting together your looks, it’s important to consider where your photos are being taken. If you are shooting in a urban location, like your favorite city for example, you will be wearing something completely different than if you are taking the photos in an open field. You don’t want your outfits to clash with your setting, so keep that in mind when you are choosing what to wear.

Think in Color: Creating a color story for your shoot is a great way to keep everything cohesive and consistent. For example, I was feeling navy blue for our session this year. I just love my rich navy velvet dress from TopShop with my hubby’s simple button up and Scout and Sawyer’s bows. Choose a color or two and be sure that everyone is wearing those colors in one way or another.

Mix Textures: Now that you have a color theme in place, it’s time to mix different textures to add interest to your looks! The last thing you want is for everyone to be in solid colors because it can look very dated and boring. Don’t shy away from mixing interesting prints and textures within your color theme for a fashionable and fun photo session.

Be Unique! Family photos should be fun and showcase your personality as a family. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your looks. Dress up in a cocktail gown or go holiday boho if that’s your style! These are pictures you will have forever, so they should represent who you are and reflect your personal style.

I hope you found these tips helpful! If you’re looking for a great printing company for your holiday cards, I love Minted.com because they offer amazing prints at great prices. You can get 15% off your holiday card order when you shop now!

Happy Holidays!
